We began our day by attending the senior spelling bee for students in Grade 3 to Grade 6 this morning. Congratulations to all the girls from our class who participated today and to Jasleen, Ashmeen, and Jessica who are invited to compete against The Maples Academy on Monday, June 8.

We then headed to class where we had novel study time. The plot got very intense as we read chapter 15 & 16 of Number the Stars. Students answered literal, inferential, and opinion questions relating to these chapters. We concluded novel study time with a discussion of the chapters we had read.

Next up was math. Students used today’s math time to work through a review package to prepare for Monday’s unit test on probability. I met with students to discuss how they had completed all review questions attempted in class. The package is coming home today. Students who did not get done in class should complete the package over the weekend.

Probability Experiments

We began our day by attending the junior spelling bee for students in JK to Grade 2 this morning.

We then headed to class where we had novel study time. Once again students thoroughly enjoyed the readings and discussion of Number the Stars. Students read chapters 13 & 14. They answered literal, inferential, and opinion questions relating to these chapters. We concluded novel study time with a discussion of the chapters we had read.

Next up was math. We reviewed how to make a prediction or a theoretical probability about an experiment based on a spinner or the likelihood of an outcome. We also reviewed how to use a tree diagram to write a theoretical probability.

Students had drama time with Mr. Monaghan.

During French time, Ms. H kindly allowed us to use the time to work on our final inquiry project on beliefs and values. Students who did not get done in class are asked to complete this project for tomorrow. Students have been encouraged to discuss with their parents beliefs and/or values that are important to their families and to write about these.

Because we did not have enough time to finish our math lesson this morning, the class was kept out of gym in order to work on math. Students paired up with a partner to predict and conduct at least 2 probability experiments. I did not assign math for homework because of the materials needed and the need to work with a partner. Students who would like to improvise at home and work with a parent as a partner are encouraged to do so. Please complete the experiments you did not get to do in class on p. 424 & 425 of the MMS textbook. Students will be writing a unit test on probability on Monday, June 8.

Homework & Reminders

  • MMS – Complete any outstanding experiments on p. 424 & 425 if you would like. Probability unit test on Monday, June 8
  • Religion Rules Project – please complete at home today if you did not get done in class and return to school tomorrow
  • Aerosports waiver needs to be filled in on-line
  • Aerosports & Mandarin trip form, payment, & waiver due Monday, June 8
  • Spelling bee finalists – keep practicing your spelling
  • Tomorrow - Spelling Bee at 9 am. Families are welcome to attend.

Arts Night

We began our day with an Arts Night rehearsal. Remember that the Arts Night performance takes place at 7 pm tonight. Students are asked to arrive at 6:45 pm in their costumes.

We had novel study time when we got back to class. We discussed chapter 10 of Number the Stars. Students then had class time to read chapter 11 and complete the discussion questions independently. We took up the questions. We repeated this process once more and completed the reading, questions, and discussion for chapter 12.

Next up was math. Students read about experiments that were yet to be performed. They used the information that was given to make a prediction of how many times an outcome would take place. They then conducted the experiment and compared the results to their prediction. Once this was done, the class combined all their results and compared how close the results were to the prediction. We completed the practice questions in class. There is no math homework assigned for today. Students will be writing a unit test on probability on Monday, June 8.

The class headed back to the gym for another two run-throughs of the Arts Night performance.

Yesterday, students were introduced to the final project for our inquiry unit on religions. Due to class interruptions because of Arts Night and the spelling bee, the project has been amended in order to ensure that all students have enough class time to complete it well. Students learned that they will be reporting on how they express their own beliefs and/or values. Students will be writing a report on their beliefs and values. Students used the remainder of class time available to work on their report.

Students attended Gym class today.

Tree Diagrams

We began our day with an Arts Night rehearsal. Remember that the Arts Night performance takes place at 7 pm tomorrow night. Students are asked to arrive at 6:45 pm in their costumes.
Next up was math. We used tree diagrams to solve probability problems where there are many possible outcomes. Grade 6s students needed much support with these problems. A number of students completed all practice problems in class. Students who did not get done are asked to complete the remaining problems on p. 418 & 419 of the MMS textbook for homework. Students will be writing a unit test on probability on Monday, June 8.
Our novel study time is a time that Grade 6s are enjoying very much. We discussed chapter 9 of Number the Stars. Students then had class time to read chapter 10 and complete the discussion questions independently.
The class headed back to the gym for another Arts Night rehearsal.
At the end of the day, students were introduced to the final project for our inquiry unit on religions. Students will be writing a children’s book on a belief system of their choice. Grade 6s have already chosen the belief system they would like to write about. Students should bring devices to school for the remainder of the week for research purposes.
Students attended French and Gym class today.

In-Class Spelling Bee Contest

Today we worked in our portable again. We will be here for a few more days and then we will be in the main building before the exciting move.

We began our day with our in-class spelling bee. Congratulations to Jasleen, Shannon, Temi, Ashmeen, and Jessica who have made it to the SJA Spelling Bee finals this Friday, June 5 at 9 am. Families are welcome to attend.

Next up was math. We did not begin a new lesson, but reviewed the lesson we covered on Friday as more than half the class was away. Most students completed and corrected all practice problems in class. These students then completed and corrected our first lesson on probabilities where students described experimental and theoretical probabilities. Students who did not get done in class is asked to complete the practice problems on p. 414 & 415 for homework. Students will be writing a unit test on probability on Monday, June 8. Students are bringing home their patterning tests today. Please take time to review, sign, and return the test.

Next up was novel study time. We took time to allow for reading time for chapters 7 & 8 as many students were away when we did this last week. We had discussion time about these chapters. Students then read chapter 9 and answered the questions relating to this chapter.

We had inquiry time next. We took time to discuss what we had learned about Hinduism from our guest speakers Dave and Gina last Friday. Students that were in class for this visit shared what they learned with students that were away on the soccer and choir trips.

Students attended Drama, French, and Gym class today.

Look out for Summer Fair letters and Cookie Dough Fundraiser letters coming home today.
