We celebrated returning to school by students sharing what
the did over the holidays with the class. We then discussed our goals for
working hard for the remainder of the this term.
In math, we continued with the data management unit we began
before the Christmas Break. Today we reviewed median, mean, and mode. We also
discussed primary, secondary, discrete, and continuous data. Ask your child to
explain these concepts to you. We also reviewed when students should use a
line, bar, or circle graph to represent a set of data. We collected the hand
spans of students in the class. Students chose a graph to represent the data.
We discussed how the type of graph and the scale creates different impressions
about the data. Students are asked to complete p. 180 & 181 in their
textbooks for homework. Students have received 1-cm grid paper to complete
their homework. Students are asked to bring their devices to school for math
class tomorrow. They will need access to Excel as we will be creating data
tables and graphs.
In our human body inquiry unit, students were introduced to
the final tasks for this unit. Grade 6s will be writing a test on the
circulatory and nervous systems on Monday, November 12. Students were presented
the options for the final project for this unit. They may either create a
tri-fold brochure (using software such as Microsoft Publisher) or a pop-up
book. Students who choose the brochure option will focus their research on a
disease that affects a human organ or system as well as treatment options for
people who have this disease and how their quality of life is affected.
Students who choose the pop-up book option will focus on explaining how a human
body system works, how it is connected to other systems, and ways to keep this
system healthy. Students could choose to work alone or with a partner for this
project. The following choices have been made so far:
Ashmeen & Temi: brochure, lung cancer
Victoria & Jessica: brochure, HIV AIDS
Nathan & Zachary: brochure, ???
Jasleen & Julia: brochure, brain cancer
Students received a package which outlines the expectations
for this project. They received time today to read through the package, and
begin researching their topic. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their
devices to school in order to research their topic. Students will receive 1. 5
hours a day to complete their research. Students who chose the brochure option will
need access to software that has a tri-fold brochure template such as Microsoft
Publisher. The final product is due Friday, January 16.
We also briefly discussed the annual SJA oral competition
taking place on Feb. 26. Students have been asked to begin thinking of topics
they are interested in for their persuasive speeches.
We ended the day dividing up the work that needs to be done
