Harvesting & Milling

In our math unit on fractions and decimals we ordered and compared decimals. Students discovered that we use the same process to decide which decimal is larger or smaller as we do for whole numbers, namely looking at place value. Students used > and  < to compare decimals. They also placed decimals in order from largest to smallest or least to greatest.

Now that we have made good headway with our speeches, we have begun to work on  arithmetic again. We did some review - reducing a fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by the g.c.f.

In language, students continued working on work on list 25 spelling words.
In our speech time, I met with students who I did not meet with yesterday to time them while they read their speech in order (introduction, idea paragraphs 1,2,3, conclusion). Speeches must be between 2 and 3 minutes long. Students will be penalised if their speech is longer or shorter than this time. First draft on the entire speech in order is due tomorrow.

We continued with our inquiry unit on Pioneers. Students worked independently or in a group to discover how early pioneers harvested and milled their crops. We came across many new words, like scythe, sickle, threshing, flail, quern, and hominy block. We watched video clips to better understand the harvesting and threshing processes. Students had many new pioneer-related words to add to our class chart of A-Z of pioneer words. When they were done, they were challenged to complete a sixth page of their own A-Z booklet.
